If it feels like pest activity has picked up around Queens this summer, you’re not imagining it.

Late summer can be an especially active time for pest control.
Warm temperatures, humidity, food sources, standing water, growing insect colonies, and increased outdoor activity can all contribute to what homeowners see around their properties.
At the same time, rodents don’t simply disappear because it’s warm outside.
Here is what we’ve been seeing in the field and what Queens homeowners should be watching for as summer continues.
Yellow Jackets and Wasps Are Becoming More Noticeable
One of the seasonal problems we’ve been dealing with is increased wasp and yellow jacket activity.
Earlier in the season, a nest may be relatively small and easy for a homeowner to overlook. As summer progresses, colonies can become larger and the number of workers traveling back and forth from a nesting location can increase.
That is often when homeowners finally realize something is wrong.
We’ve been inspecting and treating properties where wasps are repeatedly returning to the same location.
This repeated flight pattern is important.
If you see wasps or yellow jackets continuously entering and exiting one small opening, there may be a nest hidden behind it.
Common nesting locations can include:
-Rooflines and eaves
-Soffits
-Siding
-Porches and decks
-Sheds
-Wall voids
-Structural gaps
-Underground areas
We’ve also removed accessible wasp nests during recent services.
One of our recent photos showed just how small a developing wasp nest can be. A homeowner could easily walk past something like this without realizing that an active colony is developing.
Why Yellow Jackets Can Become a Bigger Concern Later in Summer
As colonies mature, there can be significantly more activity around the nest.
Yellow jackets can also become highly defensive when their nesting area is disturbed.
This is why repeatedly spraying the entrance, plugging an active opening, hitting a nest, or attempting to knock it down can create unnecessary risk.
Our approach starts with determining where the insects are actually going.
We inspect the activity, locate the nesting area when possible, determine what type of treatment is appropriate, and treat the source rather than simply spraying individual insects flying around the property.
Mosquitoes Are Another Major Summer Pest
Mosquito activity is another problem homeowners notice heavily during warm weather.
A backyard can seem perfectly maintained and still have conditions nearby that support mosquito activity.
Standing water is one of the biggest things to investigate.
Buckets, children’s toys, plant saucers, clogged gutters, tarps, containers, discarded materials, and other objects can collect rainwater.
Mosquitoes don’t necessarily need a large pond.
Some species can develop in surprisingly small collections of water.
Our mosquito control work focuses on reducing activity around properties and treating appropriate areas where adult mosquitoes commonly rest.
But treatment is only part of mosquito management.
We also encourage customers to inspect their properties regularly for standing water and correct conditions that may allow mosquitoes to continue breeding.
Ants Are Taking Advantage of Warm Weather Too
We’ve also been handling ant calls throughout the warmer months.
Customers may first notice a few ants on a countertop or near a window.
Then suddenly there’s a trail.
Ant workers leave their colony to search for food and water. Once a useful food source is discovered, additional workers may begin following established trails.
This is why killing the handful of ants you see doesn’t necessarily address the colony.
During ant services, we look at where activity is concentrated and consider both interior and exterior conditions.
Kitchens, bathrooms, windows, doors, foundations, patios, vegetation, moisture, and food sources can all be important depending on the situation.
The goal is to understand where the activity is coming from instead of repeatedly spraying whatever ants happen to be visible.
Cockroaches Don’t Take the Summer Off
Cockroaches have also been keeping us busy.
We’ve been treating cockroach activity in apartments, houses, kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and multi-unit properties.
Warm, humid conditions combined with access to food and moisture can create favorable conditions for cockroaches.
German cockroaches are especially concerning inside kitchens and other areas where food, water, and warmth are readily available.
They may hide around cabinets, appliances, cracks, plumbing areas, and other protected spaces.
In multi-family buildings, cockroach control can become more complicated because insects may move through plumbing penetrations, utility openings, shared walls, and neighboring areas.
That is why we don’t believe every cockroach problem should receive exactly the same treatment.
Depending on what we find, treatment may involve targeted applications, gel bait, crack-and-crevice treatment, monitoring, sanitation recommendations, and follow-up service.
Cockroach Activity Has Been Keeping Us Busy Across Queens
Cockroaches have been one of the pest problems we’ve continued treating throughout Queens over the last several months, and warmer weather can make existing problems much more noticeable.
We’ve been called to apartments, single-family homes, multi-family properties, kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and other areas where customers are seeing recurring roach activity.
One important thing homeowners should understand is that seeing a few cockroaches does not always tell you the true level of activity.
Cockroaches spend much of their time hidden. Depending on the species and property, they may harbor behind appliances, underneath sinks, inside cabinets, around plumbing penetrations, along cracks and crevices, and in other dark areas that provide access to food, moisture, and shelter.
Seeing Roaches During the Day Can Be a Warning Sign
Many cockroaches are most active at night. If you regularly see roaches moving around during daylight hours, especially in kitchens or bathrooms, the property should be inspected more closely.
Other warning signs can include:
-Baby cockroaches
-Egg cases
-Droppings around cabinets or appliances
-Roaches scattering when lights are turned on
-Activity underneath sinks
-Roaches around refrigerators and stoves
-Repeated activity after store-bought treatments
-Roaches appearing in multiple rooms
Mice Are Still Active — Even in Summer
A lot of homeowners associate mice with winter.
But we’ve continued receiving rodent calls throughout the summer.
Mice don’t look at the calendar before entering a building.
If a property gives them access to food, water, shelter, and a convenient opening, activity can occur during any season.
Some of our most important recent work has involved finding the openings rodents may be using rather than only treating the rodents already inside.
A Recent Rodent Exclusion in Rosedale
A recent Rosedale job is a good example.
During the service, we found a vulnerable area around plumbing and the surrounding structure.
To someone who isn’t looking for rodent entry points every day, an opening like this may not seem significant.
For a mouse, it can be completely different.
Plumbing lines, utility penetrations, basement walls, foundations, construction gaps, and unfinished structural areas are some of the locations we investigate during rodent inspections.
We addressed the accessible opening and completed exclusion work to help prevent rodents from continuing to use that area.

Putting down traps or bait addresses current rodent activity.
Finding and sealing accessible entry points addresses another part of the problem: how rodents may be getting inside.
Rats Remain a Concern Around Queens Properties
Rat activity also continues through the warmer months.
Exterior food sources, garbage, vegetation, burrows, structural openings, and neighboring conditions can all influence rat activity.
On a rat job, we’re looking for evidence.
That may include burrows, droppings, gnawing, rub marks, travel paths, damaged materials, and potential access points.
The location of those signs can help us understand how rodents are using the property.
Rat control may require a combination of treatment, monitoring, sanitation improvements, exterior management, and exclusion.
Simply putting something down where a rat was seen doesn’t always tell you why the rat was there.
We want to understand the property.
Why We Have Been Doing So Much Exclusion Work
One thing that has stood out during our recent jobs is how often pest activity connects back to the structure itself.
A house can look completely sealed from the living area while openings remain hidden around utilities, plumbing, foundations, basements, crawl spaces, or exterior construction.
That is why exclusion has become such an important part of the rodent work we’ve been doing.
When we find an accessible opening that rodents may be using, properly sealing it can help make the property less accessible.
This doesn’t mean every hole is automatically a rodent entrance.

West Nile Virus Activity Is Up in NYC Mosquitoes
New York City has reported increased West Nile virus activity in mosquito samples this season. Queens has been one of the boroughs included in recent mosquito surveillance and control operations.
This is another reason homeowners should pay attention to standing water, overgrown vegetation, containers, clogged gutters and other areas around the property where mosquito activity can develop.

NYC Is Actively Treating Mosquito Areas
The NYC Health Department has continued mosquito-control operations during the 2026 season, including treatment in parts of Queens and other boroughs. The city uses surveillance information to determine where additional mosquito-control work is needed.

NYC Rat Sightings Are Down Overall — But Rodent Problems Haven’t Disappeared
Recent reporting shows that rat sightings have declined citywide compared with last year as New York expands trash containerization and other rodent control efforts.
But citywide numbers do not mean every home, block or neighborhood is free of rodents. Some areas are still reporting significant rat activity.
For homeowners, the basics still matter: controlling food sources, protecting garbage, identifying burrows and finding structural openings that mice or rats may be using to enter a building.
